How to SPUFS (Set Projects Up For Success)

How to SPUFS (Set Projects Up For Success) 😅
Tip #1: Connect with your client on a human level.

I’m leading a Discovery project kick off on Monday (yes, I’ll be working during #DF23) where the participants are distributed between Bangladesh, Holland, and Toronto.

Before the kick off, I’ve already had a few calls with client side PM to
– identify the attendees for kick off and workshops
– brief him on how the discovery will be run
– talk about ways of working for example around work hours, timezones, communication strategy and cultural specifics
– share my leadership and communication style
– look at how I will be monitoring and reporting project issues using RAIDD and status updates
– discuss scheduling a weekly informal check-in between us to get on top of any project issues

In short, I made it a point to get him on board with the idea that this is OUR project.

We are JOINTLY accountable and responsible for making this a success and to face any obstacles together as a UNIFIED team.

In fact, I even provided access to my kickoff deck so he can add his comments and edits on the slides before Monday.

I don’t know any other partner side PM who does this, but I do know how effective this can be to create a trusting relationship.

When people are enrolled into the vision I have for my project, we can do the hard and impossible things.

That’s because we’d be doing work that we can be proud of, with people who care deeply about making an impact using our skills and expertise.

What do you do in the initial stages of a project to SPUFS*? 😁

*Maybe I need to get someone else to come up with a more clever title 🤭

ps: If you’re coming to SF this week, DM me if you want to talk about #SalesforceDiscovery101 (I wrote that book!) or consulting or #ProjectManagement or just meet up for some boba tea! 🧋
