I am horrified, disgusted and angry all at the same time. ๐คฌ
Horrifed to find out exactly how much money is being burned every day through use of AI. ๐ฐ๐ฅ
ChatGPT users burn about $700,000 per day.
Sora users burn about ยฃ1.5 million per day.
PER DAY! ๐ฑ
On dumb, trivial click baiting ‘viral’ and deepfake videos.
On generating plagiarised styles for images and infographs to accompany ‘thought-leadership’ posts. ๐คข
On spewing streams of AI slop that pollutes our feed and stains our soul.
Disgusted at the cost in terms of what we ACTUALLY pay – in terms of
๐ฉ the wanton ecological rape of the planet resources
๐ฉ brain matter spillage in the name of ‘efficiency’, ‘productivity’ and innovation’
๐ฉย swindling the young people entering the workforce of creating a meaningful career by working on a craft or skill that moves them
Yes – AI has some incredible application that is utterly mindblowing.
For science, for health, for life. ๐ฑ
There is no doubt that there is absolutely a place for such an incredible technology.
However, most people generally choose the path of least resistance – at the expense of building character, strength and muscle.
It’s easier to press a button to create something effortlessly, without thought, rather than invest hours, days, months and years of practice to truly master the craft of writing, creating, building. ๐ฏ
This means that it’s easier to create the bilge that floods social media on a daily basis. Which disgusts me no end.ย ๐คข๐คฎ
And I also feel real anger towards the ‘tech bros’ who are egging each other on, without real thought of the cost to humanity in the long run. ๐
From my social media feed, it would look like humanity is moving inexorably towards mediocrity and then ugliness, to pursue mindless entertainment instead of meaningful existance.
It can feel hopeless at times, especially when I read about people who pursue AI ‘relationships’ over real human ones. ๐
And about the rise and acceptance of inauthenticity and ‘fakeness’ in the world.
Technology isn’t bringing us closer, it’s doing the opposite. ๐
And then this happens.
I read Sprog 3’s essay and I have to sit down.
She wrote this all by herself, without any guidance from me or anyone else.
If the younger generation can see what’s happening – things might not be so bad after all. ๐
I share it here with the hopes that it will resonate with you, and persuade you to be more intentional about your use of AI.
If this post has made you stop scrolling, pause and think about how YOU use AI – she’s been successful. โค
And THAT may just spark a positive change that will make all the difference.
I am so proud of her.
In fact my other two sprogs are pretty anti-AI as well, especially when we talk about these things over dinner. ๐ฅฐ
So… maybe things will be ok after all. ๐๐
