Shouldn’t my manager be the one who’s supposed to be telling me what to do?

“Shouldn’t my manager be the one who’s supposed to be telling me what to do?”
Spooooon feeeed meeeeee 😩

My childhood education wasn’t great.
We were spoon fed information which we had to regurgitate during exams.
We weren’t taught to think, but to memorize.
Good when you’re a kid though 👍🏻

It’s easy, and it’s lazy.

It wasn’t until I came over to the UK to do my degree that I was suddenly expected to think!
Whaaat? Isn’t it the lecturer’s job to tell us what to learn and what’s going to be on the exam? 😣

I had another rude awakening when I joined the workforce.
Isn’t it my manager’s job to manage me?

Nope. 🙅🏻‍♀️

That’s what Wes Kao‘s latest newsletter is about: Managing Up.
Damnit – where were you when I was just a young naive green grasshopper some (cough) 30 years ago? 🦗😬

This week’s edition would have helped accelerate my career and my personal growth immensely.

I had to learn how to ‘manage up’ the hard way, starting with figuring out my manager’s weaknesses and bribing them with their favourite confectionary or baked goods. 😁

Perhaps by reading Wes‘s newsletter, you can learn how to wield influence and propel your career upwards without causing a health crisis amongst your ex-managers. 😝

I’m glad to see that ‘Bribe your boss’ does not feature in the 15 Tips.
