“It depends. “

A freelance consultant currently on a #ProjectManagement contract asked me if she should get certified on one of the PM exams.

I believe that most hiring companies will prefer the honest dirt of experience more than certification.

Many of us who have been around will have met those with “qualifications” in terms of university degrees and certifications that might prove theoretical knowledge but are not very good in real life.

That said, it does no harm to work and study towards certification if you’re new and you want to build foundational knowledge while looking for an entry role to get you that honest dirt. πŸ™‚

Regardless of where you’re starting from, remember the fundamentals
1. Set a stretch goal (exam or new gig beyond your comfort zone)
2. Get down and dirty. Do the difficult work of emotional labour.
3. Get up when you fail
4. Analyse, adjust and correct if necessary
5. Rinse and repeat

Step 4 is critical. Self reflection will help you understand if you’re heading the right direction.

It may be time to stop with the certs and take a pay cut to accept a junior position to get a foot in the door.

It may be time to take a pause at work so that you can study and get professionally certified copies which could give you a big salary bump in your next role.

I like those who are scrappy and aren’t afraid to roll up their sleeves to get dirty.

These are the ones on my team when #ZombieApocalypse happens!!
πŸ”ͺ🧟

Who do you want on your team during this catastrophe?

The MBA, PRINCE2, AGILE certified PM or the dirty one?😜😁
