Brother’s sprog is visiting on her Xmas break from uni so I’ve roped her into doing something positive for the human race. 🤗
I’ve been doing this on and off since 2001, though recently as a Samaritans listening volunteer and have always found the experience deeply humbling and rewarding.
The holidays are supposed to be a time of joy with loved ones but they can be deeply painful for many.
Once upon a time I thought homeless people were lazy. 😕
They can change their situation if they wanted to.
Until it almost happened to me. 😔
It doesn’t take much.
A broken relationship.
A missed paycheque when you’re living on the breadline.
An ejection from home when your family cannot accept you or your choices. 💔
They are many who are struggling but they have a mask on, and they pretend that everything is fine.
If you’re in a good place, look out for those around you who might not be doing OK.
Reach out to them.
Lend a hand.
Or just be present.
And listen.
This gentle act of kindness tells them that they matter. 💟
If you’re struggling, please reach out to family and friends.
Or you can call #Samaritans freephone 116 123 from the UK.
You can also email us at Jo (at) samaritans (dot) org, and we also provide instant messaging on our website.
If you’re in USA, the crisis number for suicide prevention is 988.
There may be services who can provide support, company and comfort locally to you.
You don’t have to go through this alone. 🌹
I’m lucky that my life has turned around, but I remember how dark life can be, and that’s why I do what I can.
If you’re like me, then #JoinTheArmyOfKindness wherever you are.
The world needs more of us. ❤️
