“Discomfort? OK. Pain? No.”

“Discomfort? OK. Pain? No.”

That’s what my xfit coach said this morning.

A really good teacher / coach recognises the difference between discomfort and pain for their students/client and that this line is not the same for everybody. 🙅🏻‍♀️

For example, someone who’s starting at a lower level such as just entering the workforce or pivoting from a different industry into the Salesforce world, or someone starting out with their fitness – their journey will not be the same as someone who’s a lot further along.

In order to keep on progressing, I must be aware of where I am, and not shortchange myself by tapping out before I hit my own HUZ (Highly Uncomfortable Zone of Growth) 😁 don’t you just love my acronyms!

It’s easy to mistake discomfort for pain (and growth) and ease off.

This is OK if I’m recovering from an injury, and I don’t want to hinder the healing process.

But to continuously improve, do the work and get 1% better every day, I need to know where my HUZ of Growth is.

And as a trainer and coach for consultants and project managers, I need to know where their HUZ is as well.

As I reflect on this, I realise it applies everywhere.

Especially with my current cohort of new #Samaritan volunteers.

When you’re doing hard work, work that matters…you need to know when the keep pushing and when to pull back.

You do this by paying attention and asking hard questions.

And not shy away from the answers.

“Damnit, it’s a Sunday. I’m aching from the last xfit session. I could do with another day of rest.” 😴

Nope, that’s just your lazy butt talking.

Get out of bed and do it.

And so I did.

Still don’t like the HUZ though 😑

But I showed up.

And I did the work.

I just wish I didn’t have to keep having the same argument with my lazy butt 😆
