How to SPUFS (Set Projects Up For Success)

How to SPUFS (Set Projects Up For Success) 😁
Tip #2: Know what ‘good’ looks like

But what does ‘good’ look like anyway?

That is the question that a lot of #SalesforcePartners ask themselves, especially those who have young or inexperienced consultants.

Along with with Alexander Lapa, we are leading a discovery with a #SalesforcePartner for their global client.

What’s really cool is that we are also running a “learn by doing” programme where we are training and coaching their consulting team on how to do discovery correctly. ✔

Sometimes it’s only possible to know what ‘good’ looks like until you see it, which is why we are doing things this way – the way that medical residency trains their new doctors. 🥼👩🏻‍⚕️👨🏻‍⚕️

‘Bumbling along’ is not acceptable when dealing with human lives, and it realy shouldn’t be acceptable anywhere else where we are trying to teach leadership skills and consulting skills.

Alex kicked off the techincal workshops today by getting a big picture view of the various parties and teams and how they use (or not use!) their current platform.

Here’s how he demonstrated what ‘good’ looks like. He
– set the tone for curiosity
– asked great open questions
– probed gently when things weren’t clear to gain accurate understanding
– showed how to quickly diagram the current architecture and integration landscapes as well as data models
– skillfully managed the conversations to stay on topic

I was particularly impressed with how quickly he processed inputs while listening to the stakeholders and was able to quickly diagram them so that everyone could see… what ‘good’ looks like.

Actually, I’d say that he’s demonstrating what ‘outstanding’ looks like. 😎

For myself, I usually need time after workshops to analyse my notes and think through the discussion before diagramming process maps, so it’s really cool to see how Alex is able to masterfully do this.

Actually, what also made this particular session stand out was the stakeholders who
– were succinct in their answers
– really engaged in the discussion
– asked great questions
– helped each other fill in gaps in knowledge and explanation

I loved the energy in the virtual room, and have a great feeling about the project! 🥰

How do you show what ‘good’ or ‘outstanding’ looks like when you’re coaching someone new?
