Preparing for a new #Salesforce Consultant role

Side note – you know someone’s a Gen X-er if you say, “Stop!”
And they reply with “Hammer Time!” ๐Ÿ˜
If they reply with “In the name of luuuuuurve” then they’re probably more from the Woodstock era and flower power! ๐ŸŒธ๐ŸŒท๐ŸŒบ๐ŸŒป

Coming back to the topic.
Once you’ve had some months working with a Consulting Partner, you’ll have had time to think about your experience.

– How did it go?
– Do you enjoy the culture within your company?
– Do you enjoy working with your team and the different clients that you get?
– How much support do you get internally when things haven’t gone to plan?
– Does the lifestyle of constant stream of projects excite you?
– Are you growing and learning in the way that you expected?
– Do you want to be doing this in the long term?

Sit down and ask some hard questions.
Remember that probation is a two-way exercise of finding out if you’re a fit for the company and if the role is a fit for you.

In many companies, the notice period during probation can be quite short – 1 month for permanent employee. This typically gets extended to 3 months once you’re confirmed, depending on the level you’re at. I.e. the higher and more senior the role, the longer the notice period.

In the past, I’ve asked for my notice period to be extended simply because I needed more time to evaluate the job role.
They were surprise, as I don’t think anyone’s made that request before.

I think everyone should look at employment as a two-way interaction in the same way you’d evaluate a romantic partner or potential mate.

– Are we compatible?
– Do our values and interests align?
– Are we soulmates?
– Or just Friends With Benefits?

etc etc etc ๐Ÿ˜
Don’t you love my mangled metaphors ๐Ÿคญ

Couple of things to note.

I recognise that for some people, getting that job may be incredibly important – enough for them to put up with environments that may be be healthy, perhaps so they can put food on the table and pay the mortgage.

Even then, there’s no harm in evaluating where you are right now, where you’re heading – and whether that destination is where you want to be.
Be mindful of the journey and its direction.

Second – ignore sunk costs.
Ignore how much it took for you to get to this point.
If its direction is heading towards where you don’t want to go, then stop and re-adjust your trajectory.

You owe it to your Future self to make the mindful choices right now.
