Active Listening

#ActiveListening.
An under rated skill.

Many people feel the need to make the other person feel better with

– sympathy
“Oh poor you. I’m sorry to hear that you lost your job.”

– platitude
“She was a horrible boss anyway. You can do better.”

– a personal story of triumph
“My old company fired me and I sucked it up and started a business and now I’m making 6 figures a month as an influencer!”

– unsolicited advice
“Perhaps it’s time for you just get married to that rich farmer, as you’re not so good with social media.”

– toxic positivity
“So chin up. You’ve got a pretty angle, and with some good lighting you could get a good profile pic that might land you a decent rich dude so you won’t have to worry about working for the rest of your life.”

No.

You don’t do the talking.
You do the listening.

No judging.

No story of when you encountered a similar thing and got through it.

No advice to give.

Just you.
Listening.
Being really present.

It’s not about you.
It’s about you being there for someone else.

#BeKind.
#BeThere.

Most of the time, that’s all that’s needed. 🌹
