I am feeling a little angry tonight.
I’ve just come off yet another call with a consultant who has been really badly treated by the #salesforce partner they work for.
Consulting can be glamorous. 🌟
In the days of yore (meaning pre-covid), we’d be travelling, eating out, visiting fascinating places and businesses to learn about how they tick.
And we’d be paid well enough for it.
But there’s the dark side.
The crazy hours. ⏲
Unrealistic expectations caused by miss-selling.
KPI measured by the b̶l̶o̶o̶d̶ ̶s̶p̶i̶l̶t̶ hours billed. 🩸
Being “chucked in the deep end” to sink or swim.
Trial by fire. 🔥
Pressure from your project manager to perform, your client to deliver the best solution, and your company to do things quicker, faster, with not enough training or support.
The worst is: young / new recruits who are left to fend for themselves, letting them crash in a spectacular way and making them think it’s all their fault.
It’s their fault for not quickly picking up the skills
– to learn the product’s ins and outs
– to keep up with the new releases
– to manage the stakeholders
– to manage conflicts and politics
– to manage their time and the demands placed upon them
– to balance saying no and protect their boundaries while saying yes to keep their jobs
It’s just plain cruel.
If you want an great team of consultants that do outstanding work, then please invest in the training and support needed to get them there.
Those of us who have been in the game long enough will have many scars to show for it. 😣
These are human souls you have in your hands.
Brené Brown talks about causing soul damage when you are unkind.
And that’s what’s making me angry tonight.
I am wishing for more kindness in the world.
Especially for those of us who deliver projects for a living.
