I’m always very introspective

I’m always very introspective after supporting vulnerable callers on my volunteering shifts with #Samaritans.

What does happy smell like?
What does angry taste like?

Research shows that emotions and physical senses (especially smell) and memories are connected

A friend was telling me about having lost her sense of smell and taste due to covid.

While it sounds trivial, I think it would be a huge loss for me.
I feel so lucky that I love the smell of my babies (even if they are teenagers now!)

My “Hey – did you actually wash your hair? Let me smell it!” tests are really so I can cuddle them close and sniff their damp mop.

Even while I grumble at their ‘aromatic’ end of the day clothes, I think about when I will miss them once they leave home to go ‘adulting’.

Many of us have lost loved ones in the last few years.
Grief can be brought back at the whiff of a smell, as does the pain of the loss. Sometimes just as sharply as if it happened yesterday.

Listening to our callers is a privilege that I do not take for granted.
It teaches me #perspective.

And so, I keep on trying
– to live my life well
– to make beautiful memories with those I love
– to create magic moments with everyone I touch

However long we have left here on this planet, we can all try to leave it just a bit better than when we entered it.

So if you sniff the heavenly smell of those freshly fried donuts calling your name … just answer them! ❤️

I will not judge you. Promise.
