Inspired by Ben Duncombe’s post

Inspired by Ben Duncombe‘s post today about the realities of consulting work in the #Salesforce world…

Is it as stressful as they say?
Burnouts?
Mental health issues?
Relentless projects and pressure?

Yes and no.
You can get this in any company, consulting or not.

I believe that culture is set by the founders who infuses their values and beliefs into the company.

A workaholic CEO is bound to expect similar behaviour from her staff.
One who is a perfectionist can be tough to work for.

Similarly, one who makes her kids musical recital and switches off on holiday is likely to be kinder to her employees.

I’ve found consulting life thoroughly exhilarating.
Sure, I worked during an era where extensive travel and relentless pressure were the norm, but no longer.

I’ve seen colleagues burnt out by the giant machines that kept on asking for more.

Most consulting partners now know that it’s unsustainable, and a new breed have come along and they now understand the value of treating their “resources” and “widgets” like the human being they are.

Do your due diligence.
Ask questions.
Use the probation period to find out if there is a good fit and let the hazy mist of romance settle into reality.

Try to push your comfort zone, because if you can transition to consulting successfully, you will find yourself levelling up at a pace that sets you up for success very quickly.

So why would you want to deny yourself a power pellet?*

Take what you hear with a pinch of salt.
Try new things.
Push yourself.
Learn about your capabilities and potential.
Say no.
Say yes.
Fall and get up.

That’s the only way to move forward.

For me, anything else is a step backwards.

Luckily I have no “reverse” gear on my stick shift 😁
