“We can only do what we can, with the resources we have, based on where we are in our own life journey for the causes we care about.” 💚
This is what I told a new volunteer on our first #Samaritans training of the year.
The training is not easy, as we cover things like #mentalhealth, #suicide, #trauma, loss, #bereavement, #abuse and other tough topics.
It is easy to feel overwhelmed and helpless when we hear stories of those who are struggling.
No.
We can’t help someone erase the memories of past abuse.
We can’t bring a loved one back to life.
We can’t make parents un-divorce and reunite the family.
We can’t save everyone.
But in our own small way, by creating this safe space for our caller to talk and to share their pain, we can sometimes help them move forward.
No, we aren’t counselors or therapists.
We are just listeners.
And just by listening, I believe that we are making making a difference.
Perhaps enough for our caller to make it through the night. 🕯
Because tomorrow might be a better day.
And the next day.
And the next.
Please, if you’re in a good place – reach out and connect with people around you. You may not be able to ‘fix their problem’ but trust me – just by listening, you will make a difference.
Better yet, you might want to volunteer at a charity that is close to your heart.
If you’re struggling with dark thoughts, reach out to Samaritans on 116 123 freephone from the UK.
Or call 988 toll free in the US.
You don’t have to go through this alone. 🌹
