So you got that job with that Partner – yay! 🥳

And you’ve read, digested, absorbed and tatooed all 12 Tips for Salesforce Consultant newbies that I posted the last few weeks 😁

How do you make sure you complete your probation successfully?
Well, you need to collect evidence.

Unlike the Industrial age where companies have hierarchy, and you might have a “Line Manager” who is both your boss and who manages your career trajectory, the Salesforce and software consulting world operates in a more ‘matrix’-like structure.

Teams form and disperse when the project ends, and you may have a different project manager (who you report to) every quarter.

As such, a person will be assigned to look after your career, and they may be called a line manager, a home manager, a reviewer, a career support manager… as an example.

What you need to do is to take charge of your probation.
You need to create some compelling objectives (make sure they are SMART goals) backed up by documented evidence. Here are some examples:

In the next 6 months, I will achieve the following

1. Personal objectives
– x number of trailhead points and badges
– y number of certs

2. Growth objectives
– write 2 blogs for SalesforceBen and for your company
– write case study of my first project for Marketing
– Speak at London’s calling or any other Dreamin’ events

3. Business Unit objectives
– support Women in Tech initiatives and lead discussion panel in July
– organise networking events for graduates and young talent

4. Obtain x number of positive and x number of ‘areas to improve’ pieces of feedback from colleagues and client contacts.

Put them all in a powerpoint deck and add supporting evidence and activities to each objective, including calls that you’ve been part of, external training you’ve done (e.g. gone through Udemy course on Salesforce ADM), papers you’ve written, etc.

Make sure to collect both positive ➕ and negative ➖ feedback from everyone you’ve worked with – especially on email, so that you can collate them and add to your deck.

At the end of the 6 months, when you’re asked why they should keep you on…
Well, it’s because you’re adding so much value, that’s why! 🙄😁

… and THAT’S how you blow them away.
