You’ll get over it

You’ll get over it.
Don’t worry, you’ll be fine!
Look on the bright side, at least you have your health.
It could be worse.
Everything happens for a reason.
There are plenty of other fishes in the sea. 🐟🐠🎣
You’ll pass next time.
You got this. 💪🏻

I could go on and on, listing examples of platitudes that sound positive and encouraging when someone shares their struggle.

And it sounds helpful, right?
Shouldn’t we be supportive this way?

Friend: “I’ve had sleeping troubles for quite awhile. I only get a few hours disturbed sleep.”

Me: “I’m so sorry you’ve been struggling. You’re amazing though, I cannot imagine how much more awesome you’d be on full rest!”

Toxic positivity.
That’s what I was doing.

Even after having been a volunteer listener for #Samaritans for about 14 years, I am still learning.

When people open up to you, and they share their vulnerability, it’s not what they want.

They want to be heard.
They want someone to listen.
To be by their side.

Be that person.
Just listen, with your heart and soul.
That’s the best gift you can give. ❤️
