When I run a big team

When I run a big team, I can tell those who’re on a smooth progression up the consulting career ladder.

Simply put – there are those who will roll their sleeves up and get stuck in the muck, and those who sniffs at it in disdain.

“I’m the senior Dev. Why should I write documentation?”

“I’m not the tester, let QA handle it.”

Those who have been in ‘big consultancies’ may get into a not-my-job mentality, which hampers their progress and their growth.

Then there are those who may have come from smaller, consulting partners, or even end-users who will cheerfully put on the different hats required to Get The Job done.

If you stay in your lane, in your niche – and don’t want to bother looking up or helping a mate in the other lane who needs a helping hand, or doing That Thing that Needs Doing… then you won’t develop the skills necessary to just grow, let alone move up the career ladder.

I expect anyone holding senior roles in my team to be able to manage client relationships well, and can handle themselves in any situation – including managing conflicts when necessary.

If you’re in a ‘character-building’ role, and you feel frustrated, take comfort in knowing that it’s building in you the skills to become an outstanding leader.

You’re the kind of person that people like to help, because you don’t moan about stuff that’s hard.

Now excuse me while I deal with ninja #1 who’s currently moaning about the unfairness of life because I’ve asked him to help me with the laundry. 🙄
