Fixed Price vs Time & Materials.

“BikeCo indicated that they wanted a fixed price quote for the project implementation, so let’s make sure that we get the right level of details in the workshops.” Vi told the team.

The team were discussing the workshops and planning the schedule of the workshops based on the scope of the SOW.

“Can you explain a bit more?” asked Rooj.

“There are two general commercial models that are usually used in software consulting – Fixed Price (FP), and Time & Materials (T&M).

“This is generally used on projects where the scope is clear, with well-defined deadlines and budgets.

“Discoveries are usually Fixed Price, mainly because the number of resources and the length of time of the Discovery phase can be derived from the scope.

“If we are to quote a fixed price project delivery in the SOW, then our Discovery workshops need to go into a lot more detail so that we can accurately estimate the work and price it up accordingly.

“If the project implementation is T&M, then we are a bit more flexible, and we can extract more details during the project to tighten the requirements.”

Some #Salesforce Partners only do FP projects, others do a mix.

To be honest, I’ve had more ‘character-building’ projects on Fixed Price engagements than a T&M one, but that’s because expectations have not been set properly. 😐
