When do you go from
🍩”I run sometimes” to “I’m a runner” 🏃🏻♂️
🍩”I write poetry sometimes” to “I’m a poet”
🍩”I doodle here and there” to “I am a creative artist”? 🎨🖼️🖌️
I’ve been thinking about identities, specifically the concept of DIDs (Default IDs) vs IIDs (Intentional IDs).
I have many DIDs.
🍧I’m a crazy, cringy mum
🍧I’m a sister, a daughter, a friend, a neighbour
🍧I’m an AWESOME teacher and coach (with an ego to match 😁)
I am a lot of things that were bestowed on me by default, without me having to do too much to get it (even as a PM, it’s a label given to me by virtue of what I do for a living).
Here are some of my IIDs I worked really hard for
🍰I am a Samaritans listener
🍰I am a writer
🍰I am a creator
🍰I am a crossfitter*
These are things I have intentionally picked up to work at, and integrate into my identity.
I was once a runner.
I was once a solutions architect. (no more, not really 😢)
I was once one of the first Microsoft Certified Systems Engineer in Malaysia. 😭(t’was a source of pride).
… and it’s ok to let go of some identities that no longer match where you are in life, or where you want to go.
It took me a really long time to learn this, and I hope it’s something my ninjas will learn too.
I’d tell them to find an identity that they want to integrate, and work really hard to make it happen.
That’s the difference between a dabbler and a master.
I know which I’d like to be!
