“I know what I’m doing!”

“I know what I’m doing!”
“Do I look like a noob?!”

Some people do not take kindly to being offered unsolicited advice.
True, there are those out there who stick their noses where they don’t belong, giving advice in situations that is none of their business. 😑

Such as parenting.
Once you have babies, everyone around you seem to know what’s best for your child, and how you are an awful parent for not following their advice.

No, I’m talking about those who has your interest at heart, and who may want to share their observation with you that may be beneficial to your success (and safety – I mean, what sort of noob stacks uneven weights on an Olympic bar?!) 🏋🏻‍♀️

Not everyone is out to get you.
Or to show you up.
Or to lord their superiority over you. 💪🏻

Sometimes when someone offers me unsolicited advice, instead of being defensive, I would take a moment to deconstruct the exchange and ask myself some questions.

Am I doing things wrong here?
Why is this person telling me that I am?
Could she be right?
Does it matter if she has a hidden agenda if she’s actually giving me good advice?
What should I do to extract value from this situation? 🤔

Once I’ve done that, I can then choose to cogitate on that advice or discard it.

One other thing – I leave emotions and Ms Ego at the door when I go through this process, because having them in the room would not be very productive.

Self Awareness and Self Management are two parts of Daniel Goleman’s Emotional Intelligence framework. Seeing the world through this lens helps me be a better person.

As does regular weight training.
Otherwise, I’d just be abig round 🍩 rolling around everywhere 😁
