Part 2 of tonight’s #LDNArcs after burrito dinner break… Mehmet Gökmen Orun continues his session on Data Migration strategies.
Here’s a summary provided by otter.ai
Here are the key takeaways from the Data Integration for Architects session:
Key Principles:
1. Understand current state of data before integration
2. Clean and purge unnecessary data
3. Standardize meaningful data
4. Reconcile data for a holistic customer understanding
5. Avoid merging unless fully confident
6. Monitor and use platform solutions
Exercise Questions and Insights:
1. Country Data Unification
– Challenge: Merging data from orgs with different country representations (e.g., England vs. United Kingdom)
– Key Approach: Maintain granularity, use ISO standards, create additional fields to preserve context
– Recommendation: Don’t lose detailed information when aggregating
2. Nonprofit Donation System Integration
– Challenge: Matching donations to contacts with multiple email addresses
– Considerations:
– Handling shared email addresses
– Using contact point consent objects
– Potential use of Data Cloud for normalization
3. Data Cloud Mapping
– Identified limitations in standard mapping techniques
– Recommended creating surrogate keys
– Suggested using interim DLO (Data Lake Object) for better mapping
4. Multi-Org Data Migration
– Consider compliance requirements
– Use data spaces to segregate sensitive information
– Potentially use nightly procedures to flag migratable records
Overall, the session emphasised the complexity of data integration and the importance of maintaining context, granularity, and compliance.
One thing stood out to me:
🍩 “One of the features in Data Cloud is data kits that will automatically ingest and map your CRM objects to the DMO. So far, roughly 98% of people with implementation experience do not use that feature, myself included. People that have just gone through the trailhead training will use it and then find out why the rest of us don’t.”
Being an architect requires a curious mindset that asks that question and digs a little deeper.
Which leads me to believe that those who rely solely on an LLM to do their job will merely be… mediocre.
Those who use them as a teaching and coaching tool to discern nuance and understand context to design the right solution will come out ahead.
Thank you Mehmet for a riveting session 🥰
