Are we creating a world of ham sandwiches when we need gourmet chefs? 🤔
I’ve been wrestling with how AI, remote work, and our changing culture are shaping the next generation of professionals.
It reminds me of Isaac Asimov’s short story “Profession” where special individuals weren’t “machine educated” because they could think originally – they were the true innovators society needed.
I really love all his books by the way. (However, I heard that he also sexualy harrassed women at sf&f conventions, which is creating a lot of mixed emotions for me) 😣
Anyway – back to my concerns:
🍩Young professionals entering remote-first workplaces without mentorship.
🍩Organisations embracing AI without proper strategy.
🍩Tech leaders replacing human judgment with automation while disbanding resources like Salesforce’s Well-Architected team. 😡😡😡
The biggest risk isn’t AI itself – it’s substituting tools for judgment development. Calculator users who understand math principles remain in control. AI users without foundational knowledge become mere operators of systems they don’t understand.
What might help:
🍎Educational institutions integrating AI as enhancement, not replacement
🍎Shifting from fact memorization to understanding WHY things work
🍎Creating structured environments for foundational skills BEFORE AI use
🍎Celebrating true craft mastery (remember the 10,000 hours concept?)
I think it was really useful for me to go through all those different threads of thought and to try and organise them properly.
My dialogue with Claude.ai was very helpful, as was my effort to articulate my struggles. It’s like being back in school! 😀
Anyway – What do you think?
Should I be worried or not?
