#LifeHack – Success comes down to the ability to pick out the signal from noise. 😶

When looking at information – discernment is such an important skill.
I have come to the conclusion that this is almost universally applicable
🍩 Gathering requirements
🍩 Listening to internal dialogue
🍩 Performance feedback
🍩 News and media
🍩 Identifying great ideas
🍩 Picking battles with kids
🍩 Knowing how someone’s actually doing

I’ve noticed that I make sub-par decisions when I focus on the ‘noise’.

Especially when I don’t exercise my Critical Thinking muscles to ask
Is it true?
Is it important?
In what context does this matter?
What’s the source of this information?
Are there hidden agenda or bias buried in this piece of info?
How do I validate the veracity?
What’s my feeling/opinion about this?
Why does this info trigger this reaction from me?
What does it mean for me?
How does this information help me?

One of the biggest skills I learned from being a volunteer listener for #Samaritans (a charity in the UK that supports people with emotional distress who could be feeling suicidal) is that it has made me an observer of human nature.

When I am on a call, I am listening to my caller without judgement and without bias. They let me into their world and tell me how life is for them.

When someone is upset about the clothes on the floor, the rude customer service agent, the paper cut… is it someone who just loves to complain?
Or maybe it’s someone who has been recently bereaved and isn’t coping?

This skill of being able to discern signal from noise will not only lay the foundation for success in a personal and professional space, but it will also engender empathy and kindness.

We need more of all of the above in the world today.#BeKind

Look around and see who’s “being strong”, but who may be drowning.
Discern the signals, and reach out and lend a helping hand.

If you’re struggling, you can call Samaritans freephone from the UK on 116 123.
If you’re in the US, it’s 988 for the crisis and suicide prevention hotline.
