A-hem! Let’s just blame the little ninjas for that bit of toilet humour, shall we? 🤭
The point I am trying to make here is that leadership in an organisation sets the tone.
The tone creates company culture.
But what is culture?
It’s the way we do things ‘over here’.
‘Over here’… we are
– kind
– helpful
– relationship-driven
– collaborative
– meticulous
– professional
– “the pie is big enough for all of us” 🥧
‘Over here’… some others are
– competitive
– insecure
– slapdash
– short-sighted
– power hungry
– toxic
– “there’s only so much pie to go around” 🍰
As Seth Godin very aptly points out, culture can be summed up in 7 words: 𝗣𝗲𝗼𝗽𝗹𝗲 𝗹𝗶𝗸𝗲 𝘂𝘀 𝗱𝗼 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗴𝘀 𝗹𝗶𝗸𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝘀
When you are in a company
that fails you
that makes you feel miserable
that makes you not want to wake up
.. start questioning why you’re there.
Money, promise of ‘advancement’ or ‘promotion’, accolades and other material signals of success will NOT make up for broken health and relationships.
#SalesforcePartners and a lot of professional services companies and consultancies that bill by the hour can sometimes default into a culture that is unkind and uncaring.
Sometimes the founders and leadership team did not initially mean it to turn out that way. But they might have stopped leading with intention, and instead have been driven by the key success metric of utilization and profit margin.
When the eyes are focused on 💰, things tend to go a bit wrong.
And people get hurt.
I turned down a chance to be the Tortoise (level 5 in the Consulting Mastery Framework) as a Practice Head because I am on a different mission!
