Sorry – you’re the PM

“Sorry – you’re the PM. You should not have taken on the role of the BA.”
I couldn’t believe what my Programme Director was telling me.

We were eyeballs deep in Discovery with a client Oop North, and my Lead Consultant (Business Analyst) suddenly got very ill.

I had a mid-level Salesforce Consultant (who had never done a workshop -whuuuuutt?!), an Integration Architect, and a graduate Management Consultant on my team.

As the Project Manager, I was there to have the difficult conversations about scope, requirements, budget, timelines – those sort of things.

I wasn’t supposed to be leading the workshops in eliciting CRM requirements – even though I had deep experience gathering functional requirements, as well as running data migration and integration workshops in a past life.

Anyway, I just went ahead and led the rest of the Discovery workshops, also pulling in my PM duties where necessary, and only mentioned it to my PD later.

He was grumpy as it messed up internal P&L lines.

I didn’t care though – We finished with a compelling Soutions Playback and SoW presentation that the client signed off!

Yesssss! 💃🏻

Being adaptable and flexible is an amazing skill.

As a #ProjectManager and a leader, it allows me to have a team who can take on slack and change roles when the situation demands it.

Always be flexible and adaptable.
Be open to change.

Being rigid in your thinking and way of working will only limit your opportunities and box you into your current situation.

However, if you’re Jack…
As in Jack of all trades…
You will be amazing when someone needs a swiss army knife
(Are you enjoying my bad metaphors yet?)

Anyway, you know what I mean.
In a word: Shape-shift!
(Also is anyone else sad that we are on the penultimate episode of LOKI?!)
