The consulting life is demanding.
Back-to-back projects, and if you’re good at what you do – you’ll be in demand.
That means limited time ‘on the bench’ to ‘come up for air’.
Sometimes, you’ll be thrown into a team where you don’t know anyone, and you’ll have to figure out how to work best with each person.
You may get a cranky customer, with whom you have to deal with on a day-to-day basis.
You may get a crummy Project Manager who makes your life difficult (unless you get me, in which case your life is only difficult if you aren’t doing your job 😁)
Sometimes you may be asked to do impossible things – like finish the build and deploy to production – yesterday!!
It can be utterly exhausting, stressful, and draining.
… and exciting, fascinating and endlessly fun at the same time!
Even with the ‘character-building’ projects!
To thrive in consulting, you need to understand your personal values, and your capacity/resiliency for growth, because at times – the pace can feel incredibly brutal.
I don’t think there is any other profession that can provide such endless variety of problems that needs unpicking – it can be any permutation of people and processes.
However, if you can push through to the other side, you’ll be rewarded with growth in character, skills, a deeper understanding of human nature, and lifelong friends.
Just keep pushing through.
It’s worth it.
