ROMs and Estimations

“How long is it going to take to complete the #Salesforce project / build this function / roll out this requirement for my #CRM system?”

There is an art to estimation when Implementing software solutions.

However, everyone wants to know how long is it going to take, so that the cost can be estimated especially during the initial sales process.

The problem is that at this stage, details and information is scant.
So much assumptions will need to be made, many which are not really based on reality.

The best that can be done is a ROM – or a Rough Order of Magnitude (why isn’t it a ROOM then? 🤔) which gives a ‘ballpark’ figure so that companies can get a sense of cost for budget approval.

Therein lies the dilemma.
Is it closer to £50k or £50million?
This range is huuuuuuuuge.

To narrow it down you will need a lot more detail and clarity about
– What’s in scope and what’s out
– What technology is going to be used
– the team, and its capability
– the risks, ESPECIALLY of any known unknowns (It’s almost impossible to estimate unknown unknowns).

Understand that if you ask for an estimation, you will need to provide a lot more concrete details before that number is a more accurate range.
