Ugg! My ‘waterproof’ phone case

Ugg! My ‘waterproof’ phone case wasn’t really waterproof!
🌊📱😵📵

It happened while we were ‘cave dipping’ in the beautiful underground Mexican cenotes, so now my phone is but a dead brick. 🧱

Anyway, as an IT nerd – I did a quick review of my backup status… the things that are going to be ok:
– contacts
– emails
– whatsapp chats/files (up to 2 am last night)
– pictures up to Jan 2022 (I manually categorise, tag and backup all photos)
– important documents and communications that are stored online

What’s probably not ok
– holiday photos
– all my draft doodles (although most have been posted on LinkedIn and in my blog)
😕

BUT – why am I not more upset than I should be?

Well, I think I have a fairly robust network backup strategy.
– I use Dropbox to store multiple sites of important files and documents offline (such as work docs and photos)
– Emails have local (backed up) pst files in case gmail or godaddy goes belly up.
– All new contacts on my mobile are added automatically to gmail contacts
– Whatsapp backed up every night

The only thing I manually back up are my mobile photos, as I feel the need to categorize them by date and event (Mexico holiday 2022 – Tulum ruins for example 😢)

I don’t want the auto backup to do it for me, as I also have many photos of ninja nostrils 👃🏻 or eyeballs 👀 whenever any one of them feel like snapping photos randomly with my phone 🙄

Anyway – apart from the fact that I can’t do any doodles until I get another phone with stylus, and feeling sad that I’ve lost my holiday photos, it’s not been too tragic.

Having a robust Backup and Disaster Recovery (DR) strategy really works.

It’s a pain to plan it and implement, but once it’s there (and running properly – you don’t want to assume backups are being made and then finding out that the tapes are faulty! Ok, that remark dates me! 😬) – you’ve got peace of mind.
