How good are you at asking good questions?
It’s a skill that is rarely taught. We covered Questioning Skills 1 on the #PeiItForward workshop last Friday.
There are many reasons for asking questions – but the ones that the Grasshopper ๐ฆ is interested in, is to ๐๐๐ฉ ๐๐ก๐๐ง๐๐ฉ๐ฎ ๐๐ฃ๐ ๐ช๐ฃ๐๐๐ง๐จ๐ฉ๐๐ฃ๐๐๐ฃ๐ as they are starting from scratch.
Keep on asking until you get the answer you are looking for.
What is my role here?
What do you expect from me?
What can I do to exceed your expectations?
What is my role in this project team?
What is expected of me during this workshop?
How do you want this written up?
Who should be reviewing my work?
Who are the other people in this team, and what do they do?
How should I conduct myself during these different meetings?
How can I contribute meaningfully to the discussion?
What should I do to prepare?
Where do you keep your project documents?
How can I familiarize myself on the organisation/team/project?
What can I do to help the team/project?
Who can I lean on for support or if I have questions?
Who can I talk to if I have challenges with people within my team or my Project Manager?
How do I complete my probation successfully?
How do I ask for feedback?
How do I deal with someone who is horrible to me?
When do you expect me to complete this task?
Is there expectation for me to work evenings and weekends?
Do you expect me to respond to all slack messages immediately?
Can you explain a bit more simply as I am new to this?
Why did you propose this option?
What does that mean?
How does this work?
What happens if we do it this other way?
What’s the best way for me to learn about this so that I can contribute meaningfully?
Why did you ask this question during the workshop?
Why did you ask the question that way?
What did the client mean when he said _____?
How a person asks questions gives me a glimpse of their thinking process.
Learn how to ask really good questions.
This is the only way to create an accurate map of the situation.
If you ask bad questions, you will get answers that doesn’t provide clarity.
“Why did I put on weight during my Mexico holiday?”
Bad question. ๐

“What’s the best way to get back on the fitness track and have fun doing it?”
That’s a MUCH better question.
Because it causes forward motion and has an expectation of an action plan, instead of being laced with accusation and shame.
Think about the questions you ask others and yourself.
Do you make it a habit of asking good questions?
