Sympathy and Empathy

Do you know the difference between sympathy and empathy?

#Samaritans explain it using a metaphor of how one would interact with someone who is in a deep dark hole.

Sympathy is not always welcomed.
Sometimes it’s seen as an imbalance of power.

I’m OK.
You’re not OK.
I’m in a place that’s higher/better than you.
And I want you to change, to be OK.
Like me.

Empathy, on the other hand provides a level playing field.

Let me sit with you.
This seems so dark.
Is it the same for you?
What are you feeling right now?
What are you thinking?

There is no judgement.
There is only compassion.

There is no problem to be fixed.
There is only kindness.

I am saying:
I see you.
I hear you.
I am here with you.
And more importantly, you are not alone.
